I love the summary of news and research in the [Hive] monthly newsletter. I always find insightful stories and articles that I'd missed. I recommend it for any advocate looking to stay up to date.

This is the main way I interact with the animal advocacy community. It's totally invaluable for chatting with people in our movement. For about a year, I searched but struggled to find other data science people in animal advocacy. On [Hive Slack], I've been able to connect meaningfully with a bunch of them! I also used this platform to provide free AI help to 3 non-profits. I don't know how I'd have connected with them otherwise. Lastly, from the perspective of Bryant research (my employer at time of writing) it's heart-warming to see advocates discussing our research on IAA and how it's helping them.

When I first started working in the animal advocacy space, just under 18 months ago, I knew few advocates and needed to very quickly learn a lot about the movement. [Hive] has been instrumental in connecting me to advocates from across the globe who I likely wouldn’t have come across otherwise. It’s been a wonderfully supportive space to learn, ask questions and discuss ideas, and I’ve had so many interesting conversations. I highly recommend this community!

The Slack Workspace is a great way to connect and exchange ideas with animal advocates around the globe. For every topic and every request, there is a corresponding channel, and I get the impression that everyone is super helpful. That's why I always like to refer other activists to the Slack Workspace.

I cherish my involvement in the [Hive] community. It's truly inspiring to discover the diverse initiatives underway within the movement, explore potential opportunities, and establish meaningful connections with fellow members. I recently applied for a job that was posted in the job-postings channel, and to my delight, I secured the position! I suspect this fantastic opportunity was initially shared on the FAST List. However, since I am no longer subscribed to that listserv, I wouldn't have been aware of it otherwise.

The [Hive] Slack space has been a game changer for me. I joined the space while I was job hunting, and it provided the exact sense of community and support that I needed. I learned about conferences, events, and met many people who I now talk with regularly. I found a job posting in the #job-postings channel for a role with New Roots Institute, and I'm happy to say I accepted the job and am very happy in my new position. I don't think I would be where I am now without [Hive], and I am so grateful for their work.

It's wonderful to encounter such an active community of intelligent, hard-working, and professional people dedicated to animal advocacy. This community embodies a genuine spirit of giving – from sharing grants and AI tools to conferences. It consistently goes the distance to ensure contributions to animal advocacy are as effective as possible.

When I first started advocating for animals I certainly felt alone. This was in the 1990s and I didn't have a computer, or internet, or really any sense of community of folks who cared like I did. Sometimes I thought "am I the only one?" [Hive] ensures that people who care about creating a more humane world will never feel that way again. Fighting on behalf of animals is challenging enough going against powerful interests. Doing it alone makes it impossible. Fortunately, [Hive] won't let that happen. The most impactful organizations and companies and campaigns are led not by one person but by a groups of folks who have put their hearts on the line. I'm excited to see all that is accomplished by everyone who [Hive] brings together!

I find the [Hive] Slack space incredibly valuable for a variety of reasons: - enables me to stay up-to-date on animal advocacy related news and resources. I run a nationwide animal advocacy group to which I send weekly digests. Since most newsletters are (understandably!) sent out on a monthly-ish basis, the Slack is my go-to resource for my digests. - helps me connect with animal advocates all over the world. Wherever I, or someone I know, have questions about specific organizations/research projects/etc., the community makes it possible for me to ask relevant experts directly. This feels more personable than if I were to contact them through their E-Mail or elsewhere, which, I believe, creates a lower entry barrier for reaching out. I also started leading a regional channel for German-speaking people that I see a lot of potential in. - helps me help advocates become more invested in effectiveness. When I attend animal advocacy conferences (that are not directly EA-related), I tend to talk a lot about impactful animal advocacy as a field of research/community/practice. Inviting people to the Slack group and thereby providing them with access with "everything they need" to learn more, has by far been the best way of onboarding people into the broader community.

Since I joined [Hive] Slack my judgement towards animal sufferings and cruelty have been redefined into a more emphatic and passionate zest towards animal welfare advocacy void of speciesism. The resources shared and conversations within the community, have also enhanced my knowledge on issues around animal welfare and it's interconnectedness with other issues. The [Hive] community has provided me also with the ample opportunity of getting a support for laptop to aid my work towards animal welfare and also to be more impactful in my advocacy for a sustainable environment, where everyone's lives matter(both humans and non human animals). [Hive] is really a community for everyone who is passionate about making more impacts around animal welfare and it's interconnectedness through their careers. It is indeed a community for for everyone, as there are channels for everyone passionate about animal welfare advocacy.

I find the [Hive] Slack super useful to stay engaged with the community - it lowers the bar for reaching out to other advocates significantly and the curated channels help me to stay up-to-date on niche topics

I’ve found the [Hive] Slack very useful for making connections with people in the animal space who I otherwise wouldn’t have met, and I’ve even been able to join a conference and do some volunteering as a result of being in this Slack workspace. In addition to volunteering for Animal Advocacy Careers and [Hive], I was also able to help two other organizations think through operational and human resource challenges they were facing in a more ad hoc manner.

I recently joined the Community and wanted to thank you for sharing it with me. I have gained a lot of knowledge and information in just a few days, and it's amazing to see how much we can accomplish when we work together despite being miles apart.

I have connected with other people passionate about the same topics as me. After initiating the idea of a systems mapping group, I found people with similar ideas. We launched a workshop series during a month where we worked on the topic and applied it to a system including animals. The community's vibrant energy inspires for action!

The [Hive] Slack space has been a valuable resource for my work at Animal Advocacy Africa. It is generally helpful to stay up-to-date on new developments within the movement and connect with others, especially since I work 100% remotely. More specifically, our team was able to find a highly skilled and committed volunteer via the Slack space. She has taken the lead on analyzing a dataset and writing a blog post on her findings, an important publication for our organization. The collaboration was very productive and we might collaborate again in the future. We probably would not have found this connection without the Slack space.

Being inside the [Hive] slack space allows me to feel connected to like-minded people around the globe, and just one-click far from starting a conversation with them. I was heartened by the number of people in the [Hive] Slack community who reached out to me in response to a request I made for mentorship with internal impact evaluation for Animal Charity Evaluators. I received judgement-free support and enthusiasm. It made me feel lucky to work alongside such a generous-spirited community of folks. It's not easy to admit our growth areas and ask for what we need, and my request was met with a sincere willingness to help. As a result of reaching out to folks in the Slack channel, I now have an accountability buddy/co-learner, and several experts who have offered varying degrees of mentorship, coaching, and support. This also all happened within the space of about a week and a half, so using the [Hive] Slack channel has been an efficient way to get the support I was seeking.

I landed my first ever paid animal-advocacy gig! I posted my editing services in the “offering help” channel in the community and received a message that very same day from an author who ended up becoming a paying client. I’ve never had an easier time finding work, let alone in the animal-welfare movement!

A few months ago, I branched out from primarily working with diet change organizations to also working with animal welfare organizations. The resources and the Animal Welfare Library on the [Hive] website provided me with a wealth of information, and the Slack channel helped me to connect to many relevant people quickly. To my surprise, [Hive] also played a role in finding a co-founder for charity The Mission Motor. We are in a start-up phase and are setting up a specialized training program on Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning, which made it challenging to find a suitable co-founder. I posted the job ad on the Slack channel, and a community member told their contact about this role. From the other side of the globe, Blake Hannagan applied and turned out to be the best candidate. I highly recommend other leaders and founders in animal advocacy to join this community.

Many thanks for your information-packed newsletter and all the hard work that goes into it. I find it a great resource, it keeps me updated on progress and challenges globally, provides interesting research insights and motivates me to keep on pushing for the Animals.

The [Hive] newsletter has been a very valuable resource for me to stay up-to-date on new developments within the movement. For my work at Animal Advocacy Africa, I use it to scan for and have found plenty of new opportunities that we could recommend to the advocates and organizations we support. Personally, I tend to read most of the articles mentioned, which can sometimes lead to information overload. As the newsletter and Slack space grow further, I think it will be crucial to emphasize moderation and curation of content so that subscribers and members can use the resources most effectively.

This is an excellent and well-structured monthly newsletter full of informative news and developments in animal advocacy and welfare. I review it regularly using a weekly snooze function in my email application.

I just wanted to give you a quick thank-you for this excellent newsletter. I looked back at the June edition just now so I could find those AI browser extensions you mentioned. This is going to be helpful! Trying them out tonight. I have not been to any formal effective altruism events, but I draw a lot of useful insights from EA communities and thinkers as well as ones who are not affiliated with EA. I hope to see the EA and non-EA people collaborate well and see the value in each other’s approaches, so I love resources like your newsletter that bridge the two.

...the only negative I have is that I open a dozen new tabs of things to read when I should be working! More seriously, this aggregation of news and events is at the very list inspiring to continue my own activism.

It’s hard to keep track of what’s going on and you do an amazing job at it. I'm so grateful for the newsletter - I've been listening to the podcasts recommended in it during my work hours, and read posts with a cuppa in the mornings/evenings. Loving the resource as it covers so many different aspects and areas within EAA. Your newsletter is an excellent curation of resources and perspectives! It’s like all getting to watch the same channel at the same time! Wonderful for shared resources, news, insights, research, and feeling of community. You aren’t just compiling knowledge but doing so in a user-friendly, brain-friendly way, and you are advocating for animals along with the people who fight for them. I also trust that you will include various perspectives vs one narrow lens. This is the one thing you need to read every month to be informed and inspired.

When I was working at Google, I felt unfulfilled. I was contributing to a product used by millions, but struggled to see how it was making a real positive impact on the world. When [Hive] told me that they had been struggling with integrating and customizing an open source discussion platform for the past 4 months and were searching for their 4th software engineer to take on the project, I realized I could leverage my skills to help them. I was able to get the first MVP up in one day. It was incredibly rewarding to have my specialized knowledge quickly unblock an initiative to reduce animal suffering. The experience showed me firsthand how software engineering skills can remove friction from systems working to drive social change and this work feels more meaningful and aligned with my ethics.

I’ve been in the vegan advocacy space since year 2000, and I’ve coached a lot of local people here in the islands that wanted to start a project over the years. Your Fundraising database of courses, skills, and grant ideas is fantastic. I will definitely send people to it. Really nice touch to add a section on how to use AI. I’ve also been incorporating that more and more.

As a newer organization, the database of conferences is incredibly valuable, not just for identifying opportunities I did not know existed, but for saving me time conducting all of this research. Excellent resource.

The sense of community I’ve felt, mostly because of the slack, has been incredibly wonderful and a big help in my learning.

In just one day of being part of the [Hive] community, I've already come across an exciting volunteering opportunity that aligns with my interests. The creators are hands-on, fostering connections between members, and providing valuable information – which all makes for a genuinely engaged community. It's quickly becoming a go-to space for me.

Becca not only agreed to help me out for free but also took time to schedule a call with me to look and edit my answer to the “Tell Me About Yourself” template that she had sent me earlier that day. After that initial call, we stayed in touch and when I made it to my last round of panel interviews, Becca continued to guide me through how to tackle potential interview questions. She was extremely knowledgeable and shared her perspectives on what to expect in the final round. I’m extremely grateful for her time & effort in helping me through this process and also appreciate the wider [Hive] community in general. The support provided ultimately helped me land my new position at MFA as a Global Corporate Relations Specialist! Thank you so much!

[Hive] has been important in helping us do more effective work at Viral Vegans. Bringing the global animal rights movement together is powerful and builds momentum.

[Hive] is a fantastic resource and community which has helped me network with individuals all around the world, find local / virtual events and conferences, and engage in high quality discussions sharing and collaborating on effective animal advocacy. I jointed the Slack community in mid-2023, and it's been a phenomenal resource. Whether it's finding collaborators, bouncing ideas, or sharing expertise, I've always been able to connect with the people who can move our collective work forward.

We launched our organization this year, and the support of the Hive team and community have been incredibly helpful in accelerating our progress. For example they informed me about a local conference (VARC UK) and convinced me to attend. This led to connections with other members of the movement who shared relevant learnings from their work (e.g. marketing tactics), saving us time learning those things ourselves and making our programs more effective by building off the collective learnings of the movement. This conference also led to a partnership to provide graphic and website design support for our new giving platform, helping us move faster and achieve a better online presence, at lower cost. The Hive team have also helped us find many promising web developers to potentially build our platform on a volunteer or contract basis. They did this both by encouraging me to post our needs on the Slack community, which garnered some useful responses, and by passing on our request for proposals to people in their vast network. Finally, the Slack community has made connecting with people I need to speak to for our work far faster and easier than it would be otherwise. For example, I was able to message a specific researcher whose work I had questions about, and they responded within minutes, helping remove a blocker to building an 'impact estimator' for donations on our platform.

I can't say enough good things about the importance of Hive for the animal advocacy movement. We finally have a place where people around the world can connect 24/7 and learn from one another. The Hive founders and team are so intentional and proactive about ensuring we maximise our time on the Slack and how we can connect and for what intent. Hive is a place for both long time seasoned advocates and newbies can come for support, help, inspiration. I am in a career transition and if it giving me so many resources and opportunities and ideas for how I can best serve the movement. It's particularly helpful in ensuring folks are not trying to re-invent the wheel and we are not repeating work, research that's already done. The team are constantly getting feedback and looking at how Hive can have more impact, what opportunities there are and more. I think someone said it's like the best bits of the best conference you can imagine - and so much more. Super intentional, agile, nimble, welcoming, inclusive, the opposite of all the issues a movement might face. I'm so grateful for this vital resources that is so very needed.

The newsletter always provides really high-quality links/resources. It's become my go-to resource for what's happening in the movement, and I genuinely read it top to bottom whenever it lands in my inbox!

Through the various introductions that people have made as they join the Slack in which they describe their experience and what they can offer to the community, I have found about and subsequently reached out to a number of people who have ended up providing services for us or working for us directly. One key thing about this is that all of them have been good fits for our work since they are already aware of the importance of our cause and are passionate about it. For example, my current Head of Operations is someone I met on there and we also have a couple of researchers and designers on contract for various bits of work. This has saved us time preparing and advertising official job offers, screening applications, going through rounds of interviews, which means we have been able to spend that time focusing on our core mission. It also reduces the risk of hiring the wrong people let's say. My Research Manager has also recruited volunteers from the Hive Slack who have helped us in reviewing a book we have been working on and advise us on publication, etc.

The Hive newsletter has curated articles to help my political advocacy, even borrowing from lessons outside of the animal protection movement that have useful applications for policy work.

Since I have found the Hive community, my animal rights activism has been significantly amplified. Through Hive, I’ve gained access to a wealth of resources, connections, and support that have been instrumental in my advocacy journey. Specifically, I have met several tech professionals, a vegan city official, effective altruists, and founders of vegan advocacy organizations. While attending the Animal and Vegan Advocacy Summit, I had an immediate connection with the Hive volunteers and members. Through Hive's events channels, I learned about a conference on the emerging science of animal consciousness at NYU, an activist potluck, a fundraiser, and lobbying training. Through Hive I have been able to learn and inquire about volunteer and job opportunities as well as the ability to promote my projects and events. I appreciate the Hive community so much, that I have been actively promoting it to every activist I know and meet. I am currently looking for a job and Hive helps me in my job hunt to learn and inquire about animal advocacy volunteer and paid opportunities as well as to receive feedback to promote any of my professional projects and events.

As a new consultant, the exposure I was able to gain from the Hive community was tremendous and swift. Within a few days of my services being posted in the Hive Slack and newsletter, I was able to secure a new client. It was such an easy win-win made possible by Hive.

I first got excited about integrating AI into my work after watching Sofia’s presentation at the 2023 Animal and Vegan Advocacy Summit. Since she described the possibilities of ChatGPT, I’ve used it dozens of times and have become an evangelist for its responsible use with my team. We’re doing the animals a disservice if we’re not constantly experimenting and looking for ways we can modernize as a movement. We have right on our side. Having knowledge of the available technology that will help us become better animal advocates will ensure we have might on our side too.

I've been really enjoying using the Hive Slack channel. I recently was on the lookout for a Summer Intern to join my department at an animal protection NGO. In the 'Looking for Work' channel, I spotted a student who was looking for a summer internship. I got in contact with them directly, and they are starting with me next week. I find the different sections of the Slack channel really useful to find what I'm looking for easily. Everything's very clear to follow, and Sofia has been super helpful whenever I've had any questions. I'm looking forward to continuing to use Hive resources for my work, they are really useful to the movement.

Since I found Hive Slack, I have been able to develop my capacity to run an organization. Through Hive, I came in contact with Animal Advocacy Africa, who extended (are still doing it) training/support to me and my organization. Through their support, I learnt how to manage an organization, focus on impactful interventions, come up with a Theory of change, facilitating connections to funders, and a couple of other essential resources that I would not easily accessible.

The Hive Slack is an incredibly useful (and really well organised) resource for keeping apprised of developments and opportunities in the animal advocacy movement. Thanks to Hive, I found a volunteer research role with a high-impact organisation aligned to my research interests.

I have found Hive's Newsletters truly informative and enriching. They have been a great source of information for everything I might miss while I'm out and about doing various things. Keeping up with the Slack community conversations has also been a great experience so far- including the kind of discussions that happen and the supportive vibes of the community! It is a must-join platform if you want to connect with and stay informed about the animal advocacy community and individuals involved in various initiatives around the world.

Attending the AI, Animal Welfare, and Digital Minds Conference was an incredibly enriching experience. The event featured fascinating presentations and a very engaging public, whose stimulating questions added depth to the discussions. I had the opportunity to share the innovative use of AI at the Welfare Footprint Project. We presented our vision to map the most important sources of farm animal suffering over the next few years, provided we can initiate a collaboration with an AI research lab. The audience's enthusiasm and interest in our work were truly motivating. Participating in the follow-up retreat was another highlight. The only challenge was choosing between the many great conversation groups, each offering unique insights and perspectives. Additionally, we started specific collaborations, such as engaging Gal Zanir to help with the art and science book on the Life-Fates of Wild Boars. On a personal note, I had a fantastic time at the social events. The conference was not only intellectually stimulating but also a lot of fun. I look forward to future events and collaborations that will continue to drive progress in AI and animal welfare.

I'm really grateful to have access to Hive and the great minds sharing on this platform. It's a combination of inspiration, support and practical resources. There is never any doubt of the shared mission and the collaborative spirit. The proactive management and creativity make it a pleasure to navigate and use with ease. Thank you!

I joined Hive when I was an active member of Anima International and I was the head of a campaign (as a volunteer). However, I left Anima a few months later due to a personal situation that did not leave me enough time to keep engaging in charitable causes. I decided to stay in Hive slack anyway and I have never regretted the decision. Firstly, it helped me to stay up to date with the most important news related to farmed animal cause area. Secondly, when I decided to start volunteering again, I had a great starting point, as I could easily get in touch with other activists. This was particularly helpful around the time of EAG in London. Before the event, I got in touch with several other activists via Hive slack community to set up some meetings during EAG. Just after the event, I could follow up with some of them and stay in touch. Even though I eventually decided to engage in EA community building, instead of going back to campaigning for animals, Hive was a huge factor that facilitated my comeback. I still participate in Hive donut meetings to make sure that I stay in touch with other activists, and I find it very motivating.

Hive has been fundamental in helping me understand how I can personally have the greatest impact on animal welfare. I came to the community with a high-level understanding of the issues and a desire to make a difference, but didn't know how or where I could affect change in this space. Through conversations with Hive members — and the experts they've generously introduced me to — I now have a much clearer picture of where the problems lie, who is working to solve them, and concrete ways that someone with my background can contribute. Perhaps equally important, this community has given me renewed hope that, collectively, our efforts can and are making a dent.

I use Hive to learn from the movement all around the world. General updates but also specific topics for my job such as fundraising, operations and others. I also love how everyone is super open and kind on there!

Hive allowed me to connect with other software engineers volunteering with animal rights organizations. Through #s-ask-a-developer, I discovered and joined Cage Undefined. I got into tech with the ambition of using technology to combat animal suffering, yet it can be hard to discover opportunities to help as a software engineer beyond earning to give. I'm excited that Hive has connected me to opportunities for impactful volunteering.

Hive has been a valuable resource for sharing my newest documentary, Humans and Other Animals, with precisely the people who can put it to its best possible use as an introduction to the animal movement—including many people who might not have even come across it without Hive.

The hive community has helped me find two collaborators in the animal welfare space looking to obtain quantitative data for their research and AI training models which would have likely not happened if we weren't members.

Constance messaged with me through Hive to give me my first ever freelance grant, which was for research into how Contrapest may affect wild animal welfare! Because of Hive, I made connections with advocates and resources like The Mission Motor, Phauna, Connect for Animals, and Innovate Animal Ag. I also found Sofia's productivity course through Hive.

The Hive Slack group has been an incredible resource for my organization in multiple ways. Through them, I found passionate and skilled volunteers and interns to help advance my organization's mission of advancing businesses whose profits serve impactful charities. I've also been able to connect with senior people who have been able to provide advice on strategic direction, human resources, and other areas. The community has been an excellent place to discuss policy and other questions regarding how we can best create a more just and happy world for all conscious beings. If you want to connect with a community of caring, thoughtful, and tenacious individuals driven toward this aim, you should join the Hive Slack. I followed the Hive Newsletter while looking for job opportunities in animal advocacy, I applied many interesting positions and was hired for one of them. Thanks Hive!

I can’t imagine the animal protection movement without Hive. It’s been instrumental in facilitating introductions and establishing connections. The #fundraising channel has created a sense of community amongst fundraisers, removing the old notion that we're in competition with one another. We're greater together, and it's only been possible thanks to the Hive Slack Community.

Constance from Hive was able to put me in touch with an important business relationship where trust was paramount. Thanks to that relationship I will to be able to generate significant sums to donate to animal welfare charities. I expect it would have taken many weeks longer without her help, which would have resulted in over $10k less being donated.

The Hive Slack fills a neglected part of the animal advocacy movement, which is a space for interactive communication and resource sharing. I personally have found value in the Hive Slack workspace (such as hearing about resources I wouldn’t have known about otherwise like the Manifund EA Community Choice funding opportunity, or making connections with individuals I wouldn’t have otherwise), and I have heard from others who have similarly benefitted. There is no other communication space quite like the Hive Slack, and the team has done a great job of rapidly evolving the space to meet community demands.
